Itinarary
Day 1: Arrival in Sibiu
Arrival by flight to Sibiu. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by your tour assistant. After a short refreshment break, enjoy a guided city tour of Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture 2007, including the Evangelical Parish Church, Large and Small Squares, Bridge of Lies, and Zibin Market. We will also visit some small local shops to purchase some supplies to gift to our host communities over the coming days. In the late afternoon, transfer to Archita for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Archita – Criț (24 km / 8 h on foot / 434 m ascent)
After breakfast, visit the fortified church of Archita, then begin a gentle hike through the land of the Transylvanian Saxons. The well-marked trail leads mostly through forests and pastures, ideal for a picnic lunch. We will also take some time to pick up any trash we may come across along our hike to help keep nature clean. In the afternoon, arrive in Criț and visit its fortified church. For dinner tonight, we will invite some local elderly people to come enjoy the meal together with us as a nice gesture to the community and for a cultural exchange. Sharing a meal is a great way to connect locally. We will also gift them some of the supplies we bought on day 1. Overnight in Criț.
Day 3: Criț – Saschiz (14 km / 4.5 h on foot / 330 m ascent)
After breakfast, prepare your day pack. Today’s route is easy and passes through Saxon villages, including Cloasterf, where you may visit the fortified church. In the afternoon, arrive in Saschiz, a revitalized Saxon village. Visit the fortified church and enjoy free time. We will also visit a local organization called Colinele Transilvaniei that supports this unique region with various projects and assistance to the community. You will learn about the work they do and a donation to the organization will be made on your behalf.
Dinner and overnight in Saschiz.
Day 4: Saschiz – Șapartoc (19 km / 6 h on foot / 565 m ascent)
After breakfast, hike through Saxon villages, remote hamlets, and centuries-old forests. Reach the village of Daia, where you may interact with local residents and learn about daily rural life. We will also gift them some supplies that we bought on day 1. Continue to Șapartoc for dinner and overnight. In Sapartoc, you will participate in some daily farming activities (depending on the season and what needs to be done).
Day 5: Șapartoc – Stejărenii (24 km / 7.5 h on foot / 535 m ascent)
After breakfast, continue with a moderately difficult hike, including forest trails and some paved sections near Sighișoara. Optional guided city tour of Sighișoara (UNESCO World Heritage Site) for which we will invite a trainee guide to come and join us so they can practice interacting with tourists (Please let us know beforehand if you would like to book the city tour with trainee support so we can arrange this). After lunch time in Sighișoara, continue across the Breite Plateau, known for centuries-old oak trees.
Dinner and overnight in Stejărenii.
Day 6: Stejărenii – Mălâncrav (16.5 km / 5.5 h on foot / 515 m ascent)
A shorter and easy hike today through hills, forests, and meadows, passing the villages of Criș and Florești. In the afternoon, arrive in the idyllic village of Mălâncrav and visit its church with unique medieval frescoes. For your dinner today, you will enjoy a cooking workshop to learn how to make some traditional regional dishes. And we will invite some elderly members of the community to come and enjoy the meal together with us for a nice cultural exchange and gesture. Overnight in Mălâncrav.
Day 7: Mălâncrav – Biertan (15.5 km / 5.5 h on foot / 619 m ascent)
Hike through rolling Transylvanian-Saxon hills and deciduous forests, passing Nou Săsesc and Copșa Mare, where fortified churches can be visited. Continue towards Biertan, enjoying scenic panoramic views. In the afternoon, visit the famous fortified church of Biertan (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Dinner in Biertan at a local family-owned restaurant and overnight in Biertan.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, depending on departure time, transfer to Sibiu airport.
